I have always been reflecting on ideas of fragility – working the clay to be thin and leaving imprints of seedpods, flowers and lace. Recently I began to work with sections of clay, where the final sculpture was no longer solid but had spaces where light could pass through. This began to give the work a feeling of weightlessness. I have always sought to draw the eye of the viewer to the interior of the pieces and interestingly for me, this new technique makes the inside of the pieces even more prominent.
Today I completed in clay my third piece in this new series. The process is so exciting as the piece starts to take form. I work thin leaf and feather shaped sections, making them with their own impressions and markings. Then I blend each one individually to the main piece making sure that I leave spaces between each one. The sections follow direction together appearing to spiral around the form.
For Open Studios 2015 this new large torso will be my centre piece with the same technique echoed in other smaller vessels too.
